A Union Territory of India, Pondicherry is also known as Puducherry. For more than 300 years, it was a French colony, and this is reflected in the architectural and cultural legacy. The Promenade encircles the waterfront and the city boasts a wonderful beach. There are numerous cafes and eateries in this area.
One is Auroville
In Pondicherry, an experimental international township called Auroville was established in 1968. Almost 2,000 residents hailing from more than 50 nations call it home. The Matrimandir, a massive golden orb that serves as Auroville’s emblem, and the Auroville Beach are the area’s main draws. Moreover, visitors can have a safari in the nearby Mudaliyar Island Wildlife Sanctuary.
The French War Monument
In order to pay tribute to the First World War veterans, the French War Monument was erected in 1921. It has a statue of a woman carrying a wreath and is a well-known white-domed building. The principal promenade in Pondicherry, Goubert Avenue, is where the memorial is situated.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Sri Aurobindo, a spiritual pioneer, established the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in 1926. Several of his devotees travel there as part of their pilgrimage. The ashram features a library, a printing press, and a museum. Guests can also take part in meditation classes and learn about Sri Aurobindo’s teachings.
Bharathi Park
Beautiful park Bharathi Park is situated in the centre of Pondicherry. In honour of Indian poet and freedom hero Subramania Bharathi, it was constructed in 1826. A monument of Bharathi, a pond, and a lot of trees and flora can be found in the park. Picnics and photo opportunities are common there.
Manakula Vinayagar Temple
The Hindu deity Ganesh is the focus of the Manakula Vinayagar Temple. One of Pondicherry’s most well-known temples, it draws visitors from all around India. In the historic district, the temple is situated on Manakula Vinayagar Street.
Sacre Coeur de Jesus Church
A Catholic church called Eglise de Sacre Coeur de Jesus is situated in Pondicherry’s historic district. One of the most significant historical landmarks in the city, it was constructed in 1855 by French missionaries. Even if you are not religious, the church is worth a visit because of its stunning exterior.
The Temple of Sri Varadaraja Perumal
Vishnu is the focus of the Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple, a Hindu shrine. With roots in the Chola dynasty in the 11th century, it is one of Pondicherry’s oldest temples. The ancient town’s M G Road is where the temple is situated.
Garden of Botany
One of the attractions of Pondicherry that is a must-see is the Botanical Garden. It has a 22 acre area and was founded in 1826. More than 1,500 different plant, tree, and flower species can be found in the garden. The Government House, a house in French-style, is another feature.
Pondicherry Museum
One of the greatest sites to learn about the past and present of the city is the Pondicherry Museum. It houses a variety of French-era artefacts as well as Indian paintings, sculptures, and carvings. In the historic district, the museum is situated on Saint Louis Street.
Sri Manakula Vinayagar Hospital and Medical College
One of Pondicherry’s most esteemed medical institutes is the Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital. It was established by the French government in 1854. The hospital contains a teaching facility for medical students and offers first-rate medical services.
